"The right tool for the right job." - Martha Stewart

Microsoft Word is used by millions of people every day. In fact, I bet it's installed on your work computer, and probably on your home computer.
Word is a great program for producing all kinds of documents, such as:
letters
reports
memos and
articles.
But here is what Word is NOT: a graphic design program.
Can Word be used to design posters, invitations and brochures? Sure, BUT it's clunky, difficult to navigate, and extremely frustrating if you are trying to design something to look polished and professional.
In today's day and age there is no reason to be using Word to design graphics! In this blog post, I will suggest a much better alternative - Canva.
The Word Way
Let's look at a poster for a Lenten Retreat created using Word.

This poster is not horrible. All the information is there and it's easy to read - but it's also kind of boring.
Let's start with the photo. You may not notice it at first glance, but the image didn’t quite fit, so it had to be stretched. Because the photo shows a road and a horizon the distortion isn't very noticeable. However, if there were people in the photo, they might end up looking like they stepped out of a hall of mirrors. 🥴
Next up fonts. Deciding which fonts to use and what size they should be can be tricky. Use too many fonts and the whole design becomes a mess. But if you don't change at least the size, color or formatting it won't look much better.
And don't get me started on text boxes! Trying to make text and images move where you want them to go and stay there is an exercise in frustration.
A Better Way!
If you want a truly gorgeous poster, the best solution is to hire a professional graphic designer. But let’s be honest — most Catholic parishes don’t have that kind of budget.
Thankfully, there's a simpler more affordable option. Canva is a free, web-based design tool that makes creating beautiful posters, flyers, and social media graphics easy for anyone, no experience required.
What is Canva
Canva uses a simple drag-and-drop system with professional designed templates. You can quickly create posters, flyers, and social media graphics that look polished and inviting — even if you’ve never studied design.
Here’s that same Lenten Retreat poster, now redesigned in Canva — cleaner, sharper, and much more likely to grab attention.

Canva - the FREE Version
If you don't already have a Canva account, I highly recommend creating one. There is a paid version but you can absolutely start with the free version.
The free version includes everything most parishes will ever need: templates, photos, icons, and fonts. One of its unexpected benefits is that your choices are limited—which can actually make designing easier.
Think of it like walking into Baskin-Robbins with 31 flavors. There are so many options that you end up choosing plain vanilla! With the free version of Canva, the smaller selection makes it easier to choose a template and move forward without endless scrolling.
You can always upgrade later, but the free version is more than enough to help your parish look great online and in print.
Getting Started
Go to canva.com and create a free account today. Take a few minutes to explore the dashboard, experiment with a template. You might be surprised by what you can create.
If you’re opening Canva for the first time, it can be tempting to start changing everything at once — which often leads to frustration.
To make things easier, I’ve created a short checklist called “What to Change First When Using a Canva Template.” It walks you through the first few updates to make so you can customize a template confidently, without overthinking the design.
👉 You can download the checklist here and keep it beside you the next time you open Canva.
In my next post, I’ll walk you through creating your first design step by step.
See you soon! 👋
